Q & A with “Blackened Doom Bass” pioneers Antania

“D3D Solz” represents a unique blend within the doom bass genre, incorporating elements of blackened music. Can you elaborate on the creative process that led to this pioneering sound?

Dr Luna: It was pretty well thought out. I went to London years ago and I saw a local death metal band and then went to see The Prodigy the next day. The Prodigy was actually much heavier live. I was already knee deep in electronic music so I decided to create a death/Black Metal version of the prodigy. That is what lead to Antania.

How did the environment of Joshua Tree, CA influence the mood and texture of “D3D Solz”?

Dr Luna: Joshua Tree inspires a lot of my music at the moment.I love living here. It’s got these crazy stories of murder and dead bodies yet has powerful vortexes that I do feel out here. It’s pretty much the vibe of Antania, vortexes and dead bodies. D3D Solz is my personal favorite song on the release and is a true story of one of Kali’s best friends that died while they were living with each other as roommates a few years ago.

With such a distinct sound, what challenges did you face during the production and recording of “D3D Solz”?

Dr Luna: D3D Solz was written in my head first. The center bass line went through my head and I went down to the recording studio to lay the bass line down. I grabbed my microbrute, created the baseline and started creating bell leads to add to it. It was a super smooth track to create. Kali’s vocal track was one of my favorites.

The doom bass genre is relatively niche; how do you see Antania contributing to and expanding this genre with releases like “D3D Solz”?

Well if you look up the doom bass tag on Instagram, doom bass belongs to Antania. We seem to be one of the only projects that uses that tag right now. Black Bass Metal and Doom Bass are tags that originated from my music projects. Doom trap is a common tag but Doom bass is different. It’s more grove oriented and our song structure is far more metal then bass yet how I create the music is all bass and electronic. I was a bass player growing up, and as a musician, I believe creating bass lines with a microbrute is a more evolved version of my musical style

.

Can you share the inspiration behind the title “D3D Solz” and how it reflects the themes of the single?

Dr Luna: D3D Solz was created specifically to express a phase in Kali’s life where she lost a lot of people to death. She lost a best friend and a brother back to back. The Lyrics were specifically written about her experiences. The music idea was formed around the lyrical approach.

As a duo, how do Dr. Luna and Kali Mortem collaborate to fuse your individual influences and styles into the cohesive sound heard in “D3D Solz”?

Dr: Luna: after I finished writing the track Kali jumped in and layed down the vocals. She nailed that one right up front. This song was one of those rare creative experiences that was super smooth from beginning to end. It’s a very easy creative experience with Kali. I have been in many projects and this is Kali’s first. She jumped into Antania after I already had several tracks written.

What do you hope listeners take away from their auditory experience with “D3D Solz”?

Dr Luna: A new sound. We are creating a new version of Electronic/Metal/Noise sound and I really think the track displays they power of doom bass.
