Q&A with Blaze Olsen

– Blaze Olsen, your latest release “Rich Pricks” is a powerful anthem confronting societal inequality. What inspired you to delve into this matter for your music?

Honestly, I didn’t really mean to, but I feel like it had been on my mind so much from living in a van and witnessing it all around me. It just came out naturally. It wasn’t intentional.

– You mentioned feeling frustrated and depressed by the wealth disparity you witnessed in Malibu. Can you tell us more about the specific experiences or observations that fueled the creation of “Rich Pricks”?

Well, living in Malibu in a van you see it everywhere. You see these guys that have been living in their RVs, vans and cars for decades out there. So talking with them they would tell me about how Malibu used to be before it became so Hollywood. Plus I experienced judgement from people who lived there and was woken up a couple times on the side of the road by locals telling me to move in the middle of the night.

It’s funny too working out there as a server I would be in conversations with these wealthy people and they might complain about the homeless people around, and then I’d hit them with I live in a van, and they sometimes wouldn’t know how to respond.

– The addition of Daddy NAT brings a fresh perspective to “Rich Pricks”. How did the collaboration come about and what do you feel he added to the song?

I think NAT crushed it honestly, he saw the vision vibed with the idea and absolutely crushed it. His energy and his voice I think just meshed so well with my own that I couldn’t have asked for a better verse. I was also happy because I had really wanted to get the track mixed better and that gave me a reason to do it.

– The song tackles the divide between ‘the haves and the have nots’. What do you hope listeners take away from the track in terms of understanding and addressing societal inequality?

I hope the youth especially like Gen Z and Millennials get upset, because to me the 1950s American Dream is gone. Our economy is in disarray, while we continue to print trillions of dollars and spend it on other countries rather than take care of our own issues. It’s upsetting, they are ruining the youth of America’s future right now and we are watching it happen.

– What’s next for you creatively? Are there any upcoming projects or themes you’re excited to explore in your music?

My plan for the whole of 2024 is to be releasing singles every 2 weeks keeping the same vibe as rich pricks but touching different topics. Hopefully working with more and more artists in my kind of vibe.

Feel The Sunshine, dropped March 15th.  The song is all about mental health and coming to terms with yourself. It’s an absolute banger to me… doesn’t mean you’ll like it, and yeah I’ll just keep on keeping on.
