A noticeable stylistic departure following their grief-stricken ‘Keep My Love ClosePurple Melon called ‘a poignant indie-electronic masterpiece’ that got picked by Noctis for their Hot Off The Press playlist, Sydney’s indietronica quartet Caravãna Sun dish out a bucketload of ebullient dance pop magic on their single ‘Only The Night’, out via Embassy of Music. Basking in the same neon lit nostalgia of the 1980s as Empire of the Sun and Foals, ‘Only the Night’ strikes the right balance between the Caravãna Sun’s knack for sublime pop-hooks and their well-established reputation for unstoppable stage-presence.

“Only The Night’ is about embracing the hard times. It’s always darkest before the dawn.”

– Ant Beard, bass guitarist and singer

In stark contrast to the 1980s vibrant, king-size soundscape ‘Only The Night’ is steeped in, the humble birthplace of the song was the very opposite: “We wrote this song in our studio in the mattress factory,” Beard explains. “We were exploring a chorus where we could hear 3000 people singing back. A feeling that could be felt on a large scale.”

Built around a head bopping breakbeat backed by understated bassline, staccato guitar riffs and synth chords, band’s bass guitarist and singer Ant Beard says single’s marked emphasis for rhythmic elements serve a specific purpose:

“This song is a firm step into bringing more live energy into our recordings. For so long Caravãna Sun has been known for the live shows. We feel this song bridges the gap. We explored having a feeling in the chorus that we could just sit on for hours and hours. We wanted to create a sonic landscape that people could dance to all night, a feeling that could fill an entire space with joy and nostalgia.”

Gotta learn to lose myself for something more

Gotta learn to speak my mind when I’m not sure

Gotta find a lot inside before the dawn I know,

I know, only the night can shine so bright

That’s not to say ‘Only The Night’ is style over substance. As Beard is quick to point out, the lyrics reveal a clarion call for human resilience and tenacity:

“‘Only The Night’ is about embracing the hard times. It’s always darkest before dawn. It’s about revelling in the realness of hard times, being able to laugh in the hardest moments knowing that it’s these hard times that unite what it means to be human.”
