Q&A with multitalented singer-songwriter cool girl island

– Can you tell us more about the inspiration behind your stage name, cool girl island?
. Frankly, I can’t recall the exact inspiration, but doesn’t it have a ring to it? It somewhat echoes the satire in “Gone Girl”—reminding me of her ‘cool girl monologue’. I envision Cool Girl Island as my personal paradise, an escape, somewhere to daydream. It’s represents the cool girl in me that I reveal to the public. But wouldn’t it be nice to wander alone on this island for an afternoon? Also, having grown up on a metropolitan island adds another layer to the name.

– Your latest single, “Ocean Potion”, has a captivating and unique sound. What was the creative process like for this song?
I never start with a specific topic in mind. For “Ocean Potion,” I wanted to explore a UK garage vibe and let the song evolve from there. I believe in writing authentically, meaning whatever feels true to the moment.

– You’ve mentioned being influenced by diverse cultures and musical genres. How do these influences manifest in your music?
Cultural influences naturally seep into my music, especially when I experiment with different genres. It always ends up being a fusion of sorts, which I find genuine and unforced. I always learn something new about myself when I’m experimenting with an unfamiliar genre. I think we all have a tendency to suppress our feelings in everyday life. Song creating is an emotional release.

– “Ocean Potion” feels like a nostalgic journey through youthful romance. What emotions or experiences did you draw from when creating this song?
“Ocean Potion” emerged from a period of rediscovering love, both within myself and with someone new. The initial rush of emotions gives you the courage to free fall into something new, capturing that craziness and illogicality was important to me. Once you’re with the same person for a while, it’s not meant to feel like a tidal wave of emotions, it should be calm waters, but that’s for another song…I want “ocean potion” to remind me or anyone out there, that sometimes love just happens. You just have to be willing and ready to dive in.

– What message or feeling do you hope listeners take away from “Ocean Potion”?
Ultimately, I want people to feel warm and fuzzy. Maybe the song makes them want to dance or embark on a calming drive, or even briefly transport them back in time (fill in the blanks) —that would be wonderful.

– Can you tease any upcoming projects or collaborations that fans can look forward to?
My next project explores one of the five senses and delves deeper into satire, something I truly enjoy. Expect to hear more nonsensical fun in the future. I think life is about appreciating what you have and relax and enjoy the ride. Sometimes the road gets bumpy, just go with it and trust that you can get past it.
