There is a certain kind of tiredness that comes when you have fought for a relationship for too long. Pawnshop Motel captures that feeling on “The Haunting,” an indie rock track about reaching the point where walking away is the only option left.
Based in Denver, Colorado, Pawnshop Motel is made up of Matt and Stew. The duo formed in 2021 after years spent playing in different bands across the Kansas City, Denver, and Boulder music scenes. Their sound sits firmly in guitar-led indie rock, with influences including Cage the Elephant, The Black Keys, Kings of Leon and Spoon.
Their experience has already taken them into Nashville’s Sound Emporium, where they recorded an EP with producer Dean Miller. Back home, they have played venues including Lost Lake, Larimer Lounge, Globe Hall, and Herman’s Hideaway, steadily building their place within Colorado’s rock scene.
“The Haunting” takes a darker turn. The song was partly inspired by a story about someone who moved to New York for a relationship, only for drugs and cheating to leave everything falling apart. Elements of that story were then mixed with problems happening in Matt’s own life at the time.
That combination gives the track its sense of desperation. Gritty guitars and a restless rock sound sit behind lyrics about wanting someone out of your head, while the repeated feeling of being tired becomes central to the song. It is less about the dramatic moment a relationship ends and more about the exhaustion that finally makes you accept it is over.
There is chaos in the track, but there is acceptance too. That contrast fits Pawnshop Motel well. Their music comes from real experiences rather than trying to create a polished persona.
With “The Haunting,” Pawnshop Motel turns the messy final stages of a relationship into something raw, loud, and easy to recognize.
