Dutch alternative indie rock band After Eight arrive with The Reach, a five-track debut EP that introduces a band unafraid to move between extremes. Written over two years and recorded at Raiko Records with Stijn Donders, the release brings together indie rock, alternative rock and folk rock with touches of shoegaze, post punk and experimental rock. The result is a record that can feel expansive and guitar-heavy before suddenly becoming intimate and restrained. Across its five songs, The Reach focuses on vulnerability, longing, love, loneliness and the difficult decisions that emerge when emotional attachment meets reality.
The EP opens with “Dress And A Veil,” a song centred on the collapse of an imagined future with a partner. Rather than focusing solely on the end of a relationship, After Eight explore the grief of losing a life that had already been built in the mind. Anger and sadness sit alongside one another as the band move between heavier passages and more exposed moments. “Blinded” follows with a different kind of emotional conflict, examining the realisation that someone can provide warmth and comfort while still not being the person you are meant to be with. The track continues the EP’s interest in complicated emotions without reducing them to simple answers.
That tension carries into “All By Myself (So Quiet),” where After Eight explore the simultaneous desire for intimacy and the safety of solitude. The song captures the uneasy relationship between wanting somebody close and being afraid of what closeness might require. “Running Just To Hide” then shifts toward escapism, focusing on the instinct to keep moving when confronting difficult feelings seems impossible. Musically, the band use these changing emotional states to justify their movement between atmospheric textures and more energetic rock. The arrangements retain a sense of unpredictability, reflecting a songwriting process in which ideas develop collectively once they reach the full band.
“The Medicine You Take” closes The Reach with another complicated examination of love, this time focusing on the decision to prioritise another person’s wellbeing even when it conflicts with personal desires. Doubts about sincerity and fears of returning to old patterns leave the EP without a conventional resolution, but that uncertainty is central to its appeal. After Eight began in 2023 with a small garage concert and two original songs, eventually growing into the five-piece heard here. The Reach represents the culmination of that rapid development and offers a confident introduction to a band building its identity around contrast. Heavy and fragile in equal measure, the EP suggests After Eight are only beginning to explore how far that sound can go.
