Q&A with Molly Green

Following the release of her new single “She is Mighty”, we got to chat with talented singer-songwriter Molly Green.

– Congratulations on the release of ‘She is Mighty’! Can you tell us about the inspiration behind this powerful anthem and what it means to you personally?
Thank you! She is Mighty is about my beautiful younger sister Flo. The inspiration to write this track actually came from listening to a podcast with Miriam Margolyes, who was speaking about embracing all the elements of herself that made her wonderfully different and I thought to myself ‘this is how I want Flo to feel about herself’. I wanted to write a song that celebrated everything that I love and admire about her, and that she could listen to when she needed a reminder.

– As a recent graduate of the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts, how has your education influenced your musical journey and the direction of your career?
I would say the biggest thing I took away from LIPA was the people that I met there. I wrote She is Mighty with two of my uni friends, Danny and Freddy, and Danny has been the keys player in my band since our first year of uni. They are just two of the poeple that I left LIPA calling my friends and colleagues.
I also have to thank LIPA for equipping me with many of professional tools that I use day to day, from the business side of things, to the performance skills that I developed.

– You’ve had the opportunity to perform at various prestigious venues, from Ronnie Scotts to Glastonbury and Boomtown. How have these experiences shaped you as an artist and is there a particular performance that stands out to you?
Performing is where I am at my happiest, and I think, my best. I performed at Glastonbury when I was 15 and it was the highlight amongst a number of hugely exciting and developmental gigs at that stage of my life. I really built confidence and love for performing around that time, and still carry alot of what I learnt then, with me now.
One of my favourite gigs to date is one of my headline shows at The Cavern Club. It was a sold out show and I was totally bricking it backstage. I told the band to go on first while I pulled myself together and in that moment, I stood in front of a huge picture of Adele performing on the same stage, and told myself to go onto that stage and perform like Adele would. I strutted out and had the time of my life.

– Your upcoming mixtape is highly anticipated. Can you give us a glimpse into what listeners can expect from the rest of the tracks, and how ‘She is Mighty’ sets the tone for the overall project?
I’m so excited for what’s to come. I hope each track takes you somewhere new while still holding you in the magical bubble of old school jazz. I really went back to my foundations for this record, back to the influences of Etta James, Ella Fitzgerald, Aretha Franklin, Norah Jones and Joss Stone, whilst also drawing in some of my love for Adele and Amy Winehouse. These are the artists that make me feel sparkly, so I have sprinkled some of that sparkle into what I’ve created, in the hopes that you feel it too.

– What do you hope listeners take away from your music, particularly from ‘She is Mighty’?
I always hope that my music allows people to be heard and understood, that people can find comfort in sharing similar experiences, and that people can get lost for a moment, in a world that I have transported them to.
When people listen to She is Mighty, I hope they feel powerful and appreciated. The track celebrates the beauty and importance of being diverse, strong minded, and proud of everything that you are. I hope this track serves to remind people of that.
