Q&A with singer-songwriter magenta

– Hey magenta! What made you want to pursue a music career?
I started writing songs at around the age of 12 and released my first single at the age of 15. I am lucky that my parents never put too much pressure on me to go into a certain career so I just started to dream really big and by nature started releasing songs and pursuing opportunities in the music industry. I also never really felt drawn to any other career and although a music career is risky, it’s one where I don’t see myself getting bored of.

– Can you tell us about the inspiration behind your latest single, “it’s all beginning”? What led you to write this song?
I was inspired to write this single by a lot of overwhelming emotions of fear and excitement towards upcoming change. Writing is just something I do naturally in moments of intense emotions and thought. This song really helped me to feel more settled within myself and my feelings towards the future.

– The title “it’s all beginning” suggests a sense of transition and new beginnings. How does this theme resonate with your own experiences, particularly during the period between high school and starting university?
My transition from high school to university had a much larger meaning than I realized at the time. In university, I feel like I’m immersed in music and am given many more opportunities to hone my art with more purpose. I knew in high school that university would help me further towards my goals as I’m in a music program; but besides that, it has solidified my reasoning for wanting to go down this career path. I think this new found excitement and faith in my future as a musician really speaks to the title of the song.

– Your music is known for its personal lyrics. How do you navigate sharing such personal experiences with your audience?
The first song I released, “finding myself”, is probably one of the most personal songs I’ve released and I honestly never thought of it like that. A lot of my songs have obvious meanings, and a lot of them don’t. I like to think that I’m letting the listener perceive the lyrics and meaning of the song in any way that they can relate to and I think that helps in not worrying about how truly personal the songs actually are. I write because I find a lot of comfort in music that I can relate to and I want to do the same for others with my own music.

– What are your aspirations as an artist, and how do you see your music evolving in the future?
I have really big aspirations as an artist; I want to release albums, tour, make music videos and I’m sure that I’ll do all of that eventually, I’m just focusing on the opportunity and goal closest in front of me. My music has already evolved so much from my first EP to my sophomore EP releasing March 1st and another project I’m currently working on. I am currently learning how to produce and I think that producing my own music along with collaborating with more artists will cause my music to evolve and grow immensely in the future as I’m better able to translate my ideas.
