Sons of Sam: The Bold New Album from 33 Dogs Blending Psychedelic Garage, Alternative Rock, and Britpop

Formed in 2020, 33 Dogs stands out primarily for its sonic diversity. At the crossroads of psychedelic garage, alternative rock, and touches of britpop, this sextet—which, paradoxically, isn’t made up of 33 members—crafts carefree music where psychedelic, post-punk, and even folk influences collide, all with a characteristic sense of irony.

Their new project, Sons of Sam, promises to be an audacious exploration of this sonic diversity.

While the band’s foundation is rooted in sounds reminiscent of acts like Brian Jonestown Massacre or The Dandy Warhols, their approach is far more complex. In Sons of Sam, 33 Dogs cleverly merges garage influences (Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Ty Segall) with softer, almost ethereal tones, akin to Allah Las or Mystic Braves. But instead of merely recycling past styles, the band creates its own language: “Rog” a blend of “rock” and “dog” which encapsulates the wild, untamed sonic philosophy of the band.

The new album features songs that shift between raw energy and moments of tenderness, often within the same track.

33 Dogs first made a name for themselves with Laïka & The 33 Dogs (2021), a self-produced triple album praised for its boldness, followed by the EP Dog-Y-Style in 2023. Now, with Sons of Sam, they’ve delivered their most refined and ambitious project to date.

In summary, 33 Dogs doesn’t follow the conventional path. Their bold, hybrid approach, paired with raw and genuine energy, makes Sons of Sam a vibrant, promising album.
