Q&A with soulful crooner Donovan Keit

Following the release of his latest track “Can’t Catch My Heart”, we got to sit down with American singer-songwriter Donovan Keith.

– Hey Donovan Keith! Can you please start by introducing yourself to our readers?
My name is Donovan Keith.  I’m a Soul/Folk singer songwriter from Austin, TX.  I was raised on music from 50s-70s and my style is combination of those influences I group with.  People identify me by my authentic vocals, red hair, and crazy on stage energy.

– What made you want to pursue a music career?
I came from an acting/theater background and always enjoyed performing on stage.  But I was receiving way more money and positive reactions from audiences for my singing and decided to change paths.  The emotional connection I feel from an audience and my own personal feelings are much stronger performing music and so it was an easy choice to make.

– What would you be doing right now, if it wasn’t for your music career?
Who knows?  I’ve been pursuing it for a long time now.  I forgot what it was like to not have it.  I don’t think I had a back up plan for good reason.  There’s nothing else I’d rather be doing that traveling and playing music.

– What’s the story behind your latest track “Can’t Catch My Heart”?
It’s a song about our contradictions with relationships.  The barriers we put up that prevent us from finding real partners and real connection.  It describes a beautiful random meeting but with the thoughts lurking in the back of the mind that it won’t last because we won’t allow ourselves to be hurt or vulnerable.  We would rather project some societal trope about independence or how we don’t need a partner.  But I don’t agree with that concept.  We need each other.  Love should be sought after and partnerships valued.

– You’re performing a lot so what is your favorite song to play live?
I’ve been receiving amazing response from Can’t Catch My Heart and my last single Heartbreak Soliloquy.  People really resonate with both of those and I’m glad because that’s the direction my music is leaning toward now.

– What can we expect from you in 2024?
The new album is expected to be released in May with several more songs.  I’m also expecting to perform in Europe again for a few months this Summer.  I’ll perform for any audience anytime and I have yet to find an audience I couldn’t win over.
