Welcome B.R.A.$.$, can you introduce yourself to our readers and tell us how you started to make music?
My name is B.R.A.$.$. [Be Real And Stay Surreal]. It is a reminder to artists to be yourself; the two dollar signs are for me to remember that this game is still about the money. I started writing when I was 13 years old in my middle school music class. It was a way for me to let out my frustrations. At the time there was no way for me to be heard and I was facing struggles in school, with my self identity, with my own depression, being an individual when gangs were present and at the saddest points I felt like I would rather die then continue being an outcast in every instance. My cousins got me into writing and that freed me from feeling trapped.
What inspires you to write music?
The world that we haven’t seen portrayed yet and the people who I felt wanted to discover it. Artists like 2Pac, Nas, DMX, Lil Wayne, Eminem, Mac Miller, Tyler The Creator and so many others new and old that stay on my phone’s playlist. I want my side heard and understood like them.
How is your creative process?
It’s like water! One day I’m writing what I feel, then I may find a beat later. Or I may be listening to beats in the studio and one hits my heart and I instantly start making hooks and verses in my head. Most times I’m trying multiple styles to the same beat and then I’ll blend my favorite parts. It’s a water rollercoaster in my head for sure! I keep my note pad or phone ready for that reason.
Can you share a few words about your latest release?
OnlyFans is a fun track! It’s about taking the night life into your bedroom like we’ve seen during the pandemic on the onlyfans.com site. For this track you can dance, you can vibe, you can ride around at high speeds or cruise. The track puts you in a euphoric mood.
What do you plan for the future?
I’ll be working on more singles that focus on different facets of today’s human interest. Party life is fun to me, but I’m also a serious person too. I want to speak out on the injustice I’m personally seeing, the love I’ve felt and shared with others, etc. It’s a lot to explain. But movies are in the near future.
