Welcome to our redaction! Can you tell us how you started to make music?
I was born in Brooklyn, NY and my surroundings exposed me to different cultural and musical influences. I was always an artistic type drawing and writing. I wrote my first song when I was about twelve years of age. I had a friend that played piano and he put the music to my lyrics. To demonstrate the song, I sang it. And people started acknowledging that I could sing. So oddly, I was writing melodies and lyrics and that turned into people acknowledging me as a singer at a young age.
What inspire you to create and write?
I’ve always found music to be an emotional outlet where I can express myself. So if something touches me deep enough, ideas just start “coming to me” (or through me) I refine them and eventually they turn into songs.
How is your creative process?
First I need a foundational idea. Then I decide what genre I “hear the idea falling into”. I start trying to making the idea tangible, recording what I have, and seeing where it takes me. Sometimes the genre changes when I have something physical to listen to. I try to let the idea take me where it wants to go. And ultimately, I take a break from it, and see what I feel its missing when I return. It’s a progressive process for me until it’s complete.
How would you describe your latest single?
Im basically an RnB artist with an electronic slant. But I experiment a lot!! I really hate being pigeonholed 😕 So, this latest project comes out of my appreciation of what’s happening with indie folk music. I remember Tracy Chapman and Lizz Wright and loved their work. And I when I discovered Joy Oladokun’s music, I loved how she incorporated different influences into her art. I’ve never done a cover song as a recording artist and decided to translate her song “Changes” through my lens.
What do you plan for the future?
I have another folk influenced cover by a different artist that I’m working on. Then I’d like to return to electronically influenced music. I’m also trying to expand my catalog and get a few pieces licensed into the ever expanding musical landscape. It’s challenging into today’s market but that’s my aim. Exploring different sides as an artist is helping me grow my catalog and find my true unique voice.
